Installing Executive Version 12.x templates
This information ONLY apples to version 12 of the Executive Series
INTRODUCTION
The Executive series of multi-lingual products are add-ins for Microsoft Word. They take the form of Word Templates. The setup programme installs both the template(s) and at least one font set.
THE CURRENT UPGRADE
- The installation is set for 64-bit versions of Word running on x64 processors.
- 32-bit installers can be downloaded by logging in to the Clients area https://gateseven.net/clients-area/
- The primary aim is to maintain compatibility with existing documents.
- Since Word stores the location of attached templates in the document file, we have maintained the existing paths, even though they would not currently be appropriate.
- We also install to the Common Application data area
- It is not possible to install fonts for particular users, so, in order to keep things as simple as possible, the setup is for all users of the current computer.
- The previous copy protection system has been removed.
- Links to start new documents and to the manuals are installed on the desktop, and on the start menu.
- Uninstallation is through Control Panel>Apps
- The setup programmes are normally supplied by download from the Gate Seven web site https://www.gateseven.net/clientsarea, and are delivered as a zip file.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
- Microsoft Word.
- The setup programme supports 64-bit versions of Microsoft Word on x64 processors ONLY.
- If you need to install on other platforms please contact us – we can provide setup prgrammes for 32-bit Word, and for ARM 64 processors.
- The software itself runs on any Windows system which supports Microsoft Word equal to or later than Word 97, 32-bit or 64-bit.
UPGRADING
Uninstall any older version first, to avoid complications with duplicated files. If you install over an older version it is likely that all fonts will be unavailable until you reboot the computer.
INSTALLATION PROCESS
- You will need administrator privileges for the installation
- Copy the setup .msi file(s) to the target computer.
- You can install more than one Executive Template to a single computer
- File Installation
- Run the .msi file
- Set g7mling.ini permissions
- The file g7mling.ini must be in the same folder as the template, and it must have read/write permissions.
- The default location of the file is: C:\Program Files\GATE SEVEN\Gate Seven Multilingual\g7mling.ini
- Set Microsoft Word to allow macros to run.
- MS Word must be configured to allow all macros to run.
- To do this in Word 16/Office 365 the Trust Centre setting at Home>Options>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings>Macro Settings must be set to “Enable all macros”
RUNNING FROM OTHER LOCATIONS
The templates can be run from any folder on the computer, provided a writeable g7mling.ini is in the same folder, together with any other .ini files in the original installation folder.
INSTALLING FOR A PARTICULAR USER
Mostly users will be happy with using the installer links to start new documents. If you want the templates to be available from the File>New dialog in Word the location of user templates is “C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Custom Office Templates”.
Unless you have some good reason, do not delete the installation in Program Files
INSTALLATION PROBLEMS
Most installations are straightforward. If there are problems, they are usually caused by software which is running at the time of installation.
If you have problems in installing, first turn off any virus checking software you are running, and then retry.
If this does not work, disconnect the computer temporarily from the internet, and reboot the computer in safe mode.
To find out how to do this on your machine, hit the F1 key, and search in help for safe mode.
Once you have booted in safe mode, run the setup programme, as described above.
MANUALS
Full installation instructions are to be found on the Gate Seven web site: https://gateseven.net/clients-area/
A comprehensive manual is installed onto your hard disk, with a short cut to the desktop of the user active at install time. This is a .pdf file, and can be read with Adobe Acrobat reader or the majority of web browsers
The manual is optimised for on-screen viewing, and can also be printed to A4 paper if you need a hard copy.
VIRUS CHECKERS
Virus checkers which have the option to disable Word Macro Viruses mostly work by disabling Macros which Word runs automatically when creating, loading and/or exiting documents. If you have any such programme installed, you need to set it to allow you the option of running these macros. The software will not work without them.
SETTING UP WORD TO USE THE TEMPLATES
The default security setting in Word needs to be changed from High to Medium or Low before you can run the software. You set this from the Tools - Macro - Security Settings in earlier versions of Word, or from the Security Centre since Word 2007.
In current (2022) versions of Word the Trust Centre is at: Home>Options>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings>Macro Settings.
USING THE TEMPLATES
- Before you can implement script processing, you need to associate the template with your document.
- The quick way to do this for new documents is to Click on the New XXXXX Document item on your Start menu.
- Instructions for attaching the template to existing documents are in the Word help files.
- When you open or create a document with the template active, it will generate a toolbar based on the scripts you have installed, then ask you if you wish to type in your chosen script.
- If this does not occur, you have forgotten to associate the template, and nothing will work properly.
- Note: Word stores the complete path to attached templates in its document files. If the location of the template has changed, it will not be loaded, and the script processing will not work.
- Your options at this point are to change the attached template to the correct path – see the Word help file for instructions – or start a new Executive XXX file, and copy the text of the old document into it.
- The latter approach is usually simpler and quicker.
UNINSTALLATION
You can uninstall the software through the program manager in the normal way.
EXECUTIVE DEVANAGARI LEGACY FONTS
Devanagari fonts were renamed at some point in the past. The previous set of fonts are available as a zip file. Since they are effectvely identical to the current font set, have not been updated, and will only be found in very old documents, we do not install them by default. If you need them:
- unpack the fonts from the .zip file to a temporary folder
- Select the fonts you wish to install
- Right click on the selection
- Click on “Install for all users”
EXECUTIVE BENGALI .INI FILES
Executive Bengali uses multiple ini files which determine spacing for each BengaliU font. These must be present in the same folder as the template, or the spacing will be wrong. The symptom of this is characters overlapping, and matras in the wrong place, and at the wrong level.
